Tips to Stay Focused at the Workplace after a Breakup

April 15, 2024

If you're going through a post-breakup phase and trying to deal with it by listening to "Dancing with Your Ghost" at your workplace, trust us, it won't work at all!!

Did you hear about "Broken Heart Syndrome" or Stress-Induced Cardiomyopathy? These are terms used when someone suffers from immense emotional pain after a heartbreak. And when you're in emotional pain, the same part of your brain is affected as when you're in physical pain.

Overall, breakups are tough to deal with, and trying to focus at work while your heart is hurting is an uphill battle. Here are some tips to help you stay focused at work after a breakup and keep your mind off your ex during those long workdays!

1. Going to Work after a Breakup: Don't Snooze Your Alarm

The first thing you must do in the morning is get out of bed as that alarm goes off. We know you want to lay on your bed and check your phone, reading old messages and seeing old pictures of your ex together, but trust us, it's not worth it! You can charge your phone in another room, so you must get up to turn off the alarm. It seems a small step, but it could make a big difference in starting your day off right.

2. Working Through a Break Up: Find Your Own Closure

There are many reasons for breakups, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Some can be painful, like being ghosted or dumped during a stressful time. Just stop being dependent on your ex and find your closure within yourself!

Stick to the "NO-CONTACT RULE" and focus on rebuilding your independence. You can list why your past relationship didn't work and be honest with yourself. It'll help you take off those rose-coloured glasses and see things more clearly!

3. Say "Yes" to Your Work Buddies

We understand that in the post-breakup phase, you're feeling down almost always and want to isolate yourself and say no to social invitations. But spending time with your close coworker can make you feel good and distract you from your condition. Say yes to your office buddies for post-work coffee and dinner, EVEN IF YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE IT!!

4. Bring Your Workout Clothes to the Office

Just go to the gym after the Office. Working out is a great way to improve your mood and release those pent-up emotions. Even if it's out of your way, pack a gym bag and head straight to the gym after work. Going to the gym after work will help you avoid going home to an empty room and getting caught up in your feelings. Plus, those endorphins will make you feel better.

5. No Stalking Allowed

When you're at work and going through a heartbreak, you might check up on your ex's social media frequently, but resist the urge! Stalking your ex will only make you feel worse, distract you from work and goals, and keep you stuck in the past. We suggest you unfollow, block or do whatever you need to avoid temptation.

6. Say No to Alcohol

If you want to focus on yourself after a break, keep some distance from the alcohol. We understand that breakups can make people do some crazy things, like turning to alcohol or other substances to numb the pain, but trust us, that's not the answer. Yes, having alcohol might make you feel good in the moment, but it'll only make things worse in the long run.

7. Take a Mental Health Day

Sometimes, giving your all will not work. So, if you're struggling at work after a breakup and want to stay focused, talk to your manager. If you're having a particularly tough day, don't be afraid to take some time off work.

Take a leave for your mental health and use the day to do what makes you happy. You can do anything that makes you feel good, like treating yourself to a spa day, cooking your favourite meal, or curling up with a good book.

Wrap Up

Breakups are never easy to deal with, but with the right support from your friends and coworkers and a little self-care, you'll manage your condition and get through this. Remember to keep focus on the positive – BETTER DAY ARE AHEAD!!
